How to Maintain Your Fitness Progress When on Vacation

You take a vacation to get away from your daily routine and have new experiences. At the same time, you don’t want to undo all the progress you’ve made with your fitness program. Although you may not have the chance to hit the gym during a needed trip away, there are still some things you can do to maintain your fitness goals.

Try Walking

Walking burns calories and keeps your muscles strong, so it’s the ideal way to stay fit when traveling. In fact, you may find you have more opportunities than usual to walk, especially if you’re frequently sightseeing or shopping. In some cases, you will need to make an effort. If you’re staying in a city, try walking to restaurants and tourist sites rather than taking a taxi. On a cruise, make use of the jogging track; you’ll see plenty of walkers. If your vacation is at a resort, enjoy the sea air and watch the sun rise with an early-morning walk along the beach.

Eat Healthier

Eating healthy can be difficult on vacation, especially if you’re on the go. It’s easier sometimes to grab a quick snack or hamburger at a fast food place. But even when you’re in a hurry, you can make better choices. Local pizza tends to be healthier than fast food restaurants. You can top it with fresh veggies that are often locally-grown. When dining at sit-down restaurants, you should sample the local cuisine, but also make a point of eating a salad or substantial portion of vegetables with your meal. For breakfast, stop at a grocery store or farmer’s market and buy fresh fruit. You’ll feel better.

Do Stretches

Stretching is especially important if you’re spending hours on an airplane or in a car. Doing stretches can give you energy and endurance and refresh your body by sending oxygenated blood and nutrients to your muscles. Even in a small hotel room, you have plenty of room to do stretches such as a neck stretch, shoulder roll, and forward fall. To relieve back stiffness, lay flat on your back on the bed and dangle your legs over the edge. This stretch loosens your abs and quads, too.

It only takes a little effort each day to maintain healthy habits while you are traveling and enjoying your vacation. When you get home, you’ll be pleasantly surprised that you’ve maintained your fitness progress.
